Discourse of the Animals: The Black Panther and other poems

You came to me
uncollared.
Of course. As you were
from time immemorial.
You followed the messenger
walking towards me,
and you are the message.
That other one
was warned off,
told not to try to
touch you.
You were not his,
a message not for him.

You rounded me
on my right.
My hand stroking your fur,
easily, naturally,
so-soft, velvety.

We walk together.
Protector and guide.
That is your message
and promise.

Unbridged by language
there is a more
ancient
companionship.
A companionship
of difference,
of distinctness.
You intercede
for me
and connect me
with the origin.
You are here
but you are from there -
beyond,
across the horizon.

FROM ANIMALS TO US
You think us
dumb
because we cannot
speak.
But we have
a more
ancient
wisdom.

We may visit you
in dreams
of the night.
Soul speaking
to your soul,
if you have
ears to
hear.

TOGETHER
We have been
together
from ancient
times.

Your stories tell you,
but your focus is
elsewhere,
and you miss the
connection.

Companions
together
even if not perfect.
Perhaps that is
the point.
We are different
and our difference
remains,
always.
But it is no abyss.

When you forget
your soul
in knowledge
and human artifice,
we appear
most strange
to you,
a chasm between us.

When you hate
yourself,
you hate us.
When you are
a stranger
to yourself,
we seem strange
to you.

When you journey
back to Soul,
the ancient knowing
leads you.
Connected.
It's been a long time.
